Greetings GVMS Students and Families!

I can’t believe it’s already May! Teacher appreciation week begins today, May 2, and the PTO has planned a special week to help celebrate our fabulous staff. We encourage parents, guardians, and students to send an email or handwritten note expressing your gratitude to our fabulous GVMS teachers. They love to hear your kind and encouraging words!

This week, I’m sharing information about our spring SOL schedule, honor roll update, Family Life Education, and Rising 8th grade Drama Class. With lots of important dates and events coming up, you’ll see a few communications from me this month.

SOL SCHEDULE CHANGES: On Friday, May 6 and Thursday, May 12 we will be flipping our 6th and 7th grade schedules. On these two days, our 6th graders will eat lunch between 10:10 – 11:05 AM and our 7th graders will eat lunch between 12:40 – 1:30 PM.

Tips for students as they prepare for SOL testing:

  • Make sure you charge your laptop the night before.
  • Get a good night sleep and eat a good breakfast.
  • Use test prep resources provided by teachers to study.
  • Cell phones and smart devices such as watches are not allowed in testing environments, and we encourage students to leave those devices at home on testing days.

VIRTUAL ONLY SOL TESTING: Additional information will be shared with VO students regarding testing locations. VO students will test on the same days as in-person students. Students should arrive at GVMS at 8:15 AM and testing will begin at 8:30 AM. *Schedule changes may cause some issues with VO class times on the days of SOL testing. Please check your teacher’s Canvas page for additional information.

SOL TESTING QUESTIONS? Please reach out to the GVMS testing coordinator, Assistant Principal, Ms. Michelle Praul at [email protected].

HONOR ROLL: We recognize that an area of growth for next school year is our student recognition with honor roll and principal’s honor roll. As a school, we are discussing ways to make improvements in this area. In the meantime, we do have certificates and a gift for our principal’s honor roll recipients for all three quarters of the 2021-2022 school year that we will be distributing to students this month.

FAMILY LIFE EDUCATION: Our 6th and 7th grade students will participate in Family Life Education (FLE) through their science classes from May 23 - 26, 2022. We will send out specific dates to the community the week before. The FLE curriculum and additional information can be found at the PWCS Middle School Family Life Education Webpage.

Although the FLE program is highly compatible with existing curricula and serves to enrich the educational experiences of students, FLE content may be considered sensitive. Therefore, parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of all or any part of FLE instruction. Students who are opted out will be provided with non-punitive activities during FLE instruction. Parents/guardians should review the FLE objectives pertaining to their child’s grade or course before making opt out decisions. If you’d like to opt your child out, please fill out the form and return to your child’s science teacher or counselor.

8TH GRADE YEAR LONG DRAMA: We've received some feedback from students about wanting to take a year long drama course during their 8th grade year. If this is something your student may be interested in, please fill out the form found here.

Thank you for your partnership!
