Girls JV Basketball
Instructor: Coach Grinnell
Please check back at the end of August for any updates regarding PWCS Middle School Athletics for the 2020-2021 school year.

The JV girls basketball team completed their season with a 2 pt victory over Marsteller last night.  The girls finished the season with 8 wins against 2 losses (both by razor thin margins to a very strong and talented Reagan team).   Leading us last night was Alex Laguna and Cami Moss with 6 points each.  It's been a joy coaching these girls this year, and coaching four of the girls for two year- Big Gaby Shaw, Alex Laguna, Rylee Deveau, and Leah Stever.    Until next year, Go Hawks!

It was the Battle of the Birds: Part II.  The Eagles came fully energized, and led after the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Quarters. But the Hawks showed some resiliency, and outscored Bull Run 12-0 in the 4th quarter, sealing a 10 point victory.  Demi Gilliam's 16 points led the way. Also scoring were Audrey Mackie, Cami Moss,  and Team Stever: Leah and Riley. The Hawks take a well deserved Holiday break, and come back in January with 3 games to make a run at the title. Come on out and support!

The High Flying JV Hawks rolled to a big victory last night over Manassas Park.  All girls played and contributed, with Cami Moss (8 points, 4 steals) and Natalie Shankle (6 points, 9 rebounds) leading the charge.  Liz Leon (7 rebounds) and Leah Stever (5 steals) helped the cause.  Also scoring were Demi GIlliam, Audrey Mackie, Riley Stever, Rylee Deveau, Alex Laguna Beach, and Alena Chung.   The girls finish out 2019 portion of the schedule here tomorrow (Thursday) at the Hawk's Next in the Holiday Classic vs. Bull Run.  Come on out and catch the show!

The JV girls basketball'ers picked up a win against rival Marsteller by the score of 23-8. Leading the way once again was Demi Gilliam: 11 points, 14 rebounds and 10 steals..... a triple double for all you basketball fans.... almost unheard of at middle school.   Also playing exceptional were Audrey Mackie (6 points) and Rylee Deveau.   The Hawks head West for their next game at Manassas Park, before closing out the 2019 portion of the season at  home next Thursday vs. Bull Run.  Jump start your holiday with the Lady Hawks!

The JV Hawks came out slow against an explosive, undefeated Reagan Mustangs squad, and got themselves in a big pickle.  Down 20 points at halftime, the girls scratched and clawed their way back into the game, getting behind by just 1 point with little time left.  Unfortunately, the Hawks ran out of time and ended up losing a nail biter, 37-34.  Proud of their comeback is an understatement.
And now the stat line of the century.  Demi Gilliam.....6th grader Demi Gilliam..... 20 points, 18 Rebounds, 7 steals..... in 24 minutes of basketball.  Can't remember a time I've seen a performance like that.  She wasn't alone in her achievements: Alex Laguna had 6 points, pulled down 7 rebounds, and had 3 steals.  Leah Stever chipped in 5 points.
The Hawks have a week off to get back on track, and take on Marsteller next Thursday.

The Hawks traveled to Parkside yesterday, and despite poor singing on the bus *cough, cough Ms. Melendez, Mr. Peters....*, came away victorious.  BIG Gaby Shaw lived up to her nickname scoring 10 points.   Demi Gilliam was steady again with 9 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 steals.  A big game was turned in defensively by Caroline Tribett. She may have forgotten it was the season of giving, as she stole the ball from Parkside 7 times.   Huge game tonight here against Reagan! Go Hawks!

The JV Hawks picked up their 2nd victory of the young season with an impressive performance over Bull Run.  Demi Gilliam had her self a ballgame.... 10 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 steals..... You name it, she did it!   A large beneficiary of those Demi assists was Alex Laguna.... Alex poured in 8 points along with 4 rebounds.  Rounding out the scoring were Gaby Shaw, Leah Stever, Rylee Deveau, and Liz Leon.  The Hawks go on break but return with games Tuesday and Wednesday of next week at Parkside, then home to a tough Reagan squad.  Come on out and support!

The JV High Flying Lady Hawks opened up their season with a victory over Metz, 26-17. The Hawks flew out to a 9-0 lead in the 1st Quarter, and never looked back.   Leading the charge offensively was Demi Gilliam with 11 points, in addition to  6 rebounds and 5 steals! A great all around floor performance! Cami Moss added 6 big points and 6 rebounds, and Alex Laguna chipped in with 5 points. Gaby Shaw and Alena Chung also scored 2 each.  We are off to Bull Run on Monday to hopefully come away with another victory! Go Hawks!

There will be a brief parent meeting tomorrow (WEDS, 11/13) at the conclusion of practice.  Please park and come into the gym anytime after 4:45pm, and we will meet from 5:00-5:15ish.  Thank you!

Thank you again to all who tried out! We have an abundance of talent, which unfortunately means that some talented girls did not make the team. Please keep practicing, and come out again next year!

Gainesville 39, Marsteller 18
The JV girls completed their perfect season with a big victory over Marsteller.  As was the story for much of the season, it was a total team effort with 10 different girls contributing points in the win. Leading the way was Aubrey Beall with 10 points, Maddie McKenzie and Big Ally Logan had 6 each, Alexis Dietterick 5 points and 10 big rebounds, Leah Stever 4 points, Delaney Gilliam and Jill Fieffer 2 points, Mide Akinkube  and Large Gaby Shaw 1 point apiece. Rylee Deveau and Alex Laguna played great defense in the win!

The girls were very hard working, coachable, and always respectful. They deserve high praise, and if you see them in the hallway, tell them congrats!

Gainesville 24, Bull Run 12
The JV girls notched their 9th win in 9 games with a 12 point victory over Bull Run.  Eight different Hawks scored points. Gainesville 29, Reagan 17
Well, it wasn't the type of game the JV girls have become accustomed to, but in the end the results were.  Trailing after the 1st, after the 2nd, and after the 3rd quarters, the Hawks erupted in the 4th quarter for the come from behind victory.  Here is what I erupted means: In the first 18 minutes of the game (3 Quarters), the lady Hawks produced a total of 10 points. However, in the last 6th minutes alone (4th Quarter), they dropped in a cool 19 points!  While only allowing Reagan to score a single point. That's a 19-1 4th quarter, which resulted in a 29-17 victory.  Leading the charge were 2 girls with their best performances of the season- Both Delaney Gilliam and Alexis Dietterick led the team with 9 points each. Delaney also added 10 big rebounds to help secure the win. Also scoring were Ally Logan and Maddie Mackenzie with 2 big 4th quarter buckets each, and Aubrey Beall knocked down a foul shot.   The girls look to continue their winning ways today at home again. 4:45pm Tip against Bull Run. Start your weekend with us!

Despite possibly having a bit too much candy after their holiday secret Santa pregame exchange, the JV girls managed to remain undefeated with a solid victory over Bull Run.  Maddie McKenzie was a one woman show, as she scored over half our points (15), had 9 steals, and grabbed 5 rebounds.  Also contributing were Alexis Dietterick with 5 points, and Delaney Gilliam with 4.   The Hawks take a break until Jan 3, when they have a 3 game home stand against our strongest competition - Reagan, Bull Run, and Marsteller.  Hope to see you here!

The JV Hawks continued rolling with a big victory over Manassas Park.  Ten different girls scored, led by Aubrey Beall and Mide Akincube with 8 points apiece. Gaby Shaw chipped in with 6 points.  Jillian Fieffer, Rylee Deveau, Hannah Itayem, and Alex Laguna all had 5 rebounds.  The Hawks have one more game before break - at Bull Run on Weds. Come on out and support them!

Reagan 19

The JV Lady Hawks stayed undefeated with a strong victory over a very talented Reagan team. Down early, the girls fought back to get it close at halftime, and then exploded in the second half outscoring the Mustangs 23-8.   Leading Gainesville with one of the best played games in recent memory was Maddie McKenzie..... more affectionately known as Maddie Mac!   She poured in 14 points, collected 9 steals, added 5 rebounds, and 3 assists.  Also contributing to the cause were Alexes Dietterick (8pts, 6 rebounds) and Delaney Gilliam (5 pts, 8 rebounds).   The girls have 3 big games next week.... congratulate them and wish them luck!
